Mayor's Heritage Tea

Canada celebrates National Heritage Week in the third week of February. The City of Summerside joins in the celebration with the Mayor’s Heritage Tea, held in the beautiful Council Chambers of historic City Hall. The focal point of the tea is the presentation of the Summerside Heritage and Culture Awards given in recognition of heritage and cultural activities, carried out in the city, by individuals and organizations. A nomination call is put out in early January with a committee selecting award recipients. To learn more about the heritage and culture awards, or to nominate someone, please click here.

During the Mayor's Heritage Tea, a heritage or cultural dramatic vignette is part of the program, and as the celebration is a tea, delicious food and flavorful tea is served.  Culture Summerside is honored to organize the Mayor’s Heritage Tea for the Mayor and Council, who extend an invitation to all to attend.

Heritage and Culture Awards

The City of Summerside is seeking nominations for its annual Heritage and Culture Awards. The awards are given out to individuals and groups, which in 2022, carried out activities to preserve, promote, educate or celebrate heritage, arts, and culture in the community. The City recognizes the role of heritage, arts, and culture in building a strong, vibrant community and believes it is important for these endeavours to be recognized.

The public is invited to nominate candidates for the awards, which are presented at the Mayor’s Heritage Tea held during Heritage Week in February.  There are a number of categories for nominations: Heritage Activities, Cultural Activities, Publication of the Year, Youth and Adult Volunteers of the Year, and the Award of Honour. People are invited to think outside the box when considering a nomination. The preservation of heritage and the interpretation of culture take many forms. Examples include antique vehicle restorations, oral history projects, storytelling, performance, architectural preservation, special exhibits, digital projects, language preservation, family genealogy, natural heritage preservation and promotion, a new album, etc. There are unlimited possibilities!
